After his injury, Niesrath processes his experiences from World War I into sculptures and watercolors. The Nazi regime declared his works "degenerate art" and removed his works from the museums. His most striking work is the large-scale sculptures and reliefs on the Dortmund memorial in the Bittermark, which is dedicated to the slave laborers and resistance fighters.
